Game has a better set-up than previous Far Crys. I always found the choice for the protagonists to stay in their designated sandbox to be flimsy at best (Jason’s lost his when he rescued his friends and don’t even get me started on Ajay) – Takkar has to establish a foothold for himself and for his people, so I’m not rolling my eyes at my mucking about in the sandbox because it all ultimately goes back to helping his tribe.
Then there’s the village management. I’m a sucker for watching my stronghold grow when it comes to videogames ( Suikoden etc) – so this is a good way of getting my invested in the plot. It’s by no means settlement building ala Fallout 4 but watching the village grow with upgrades still fills me with a bit pride. You can increase the number of people in your tribe by undergoing random tasks around the map (think saving Prisoners in Far Cry 4) and if you succeed, they join you. Judging by the village screen, you can recruit a maximum of 300 people (with certain milestones netting you passive perks) – I haven’t yet counted the number of people walking in my village to confirm if 50 people rescued = 50 NPCs walking around.

The game world really does suck you in and the first few hours are both wondrous and terrifying because you can hear things moving about but often can’t see quite what they are because of the lush environment. Night time is initially terrifying and gave me the same terror vibes as when starting out in Dying Light.
Once you’ve acclimatised to the environment, you learn to identify things from their sounds and can even judge distance and direction – the music score generally keeps out of your way, presumably so as to not impact this. Once you’ve settled in and got some better gear and skills the game really does come into its own.
The dynamic of tameable beasts with different advantages and disadvantages (stealth, speed, health, attack) reminded me of playing a hunter in WoW and choosing the best pet for the job at hand. Some of the cats are insanely fast and quiet making them great for controlled stealth encounters but in an open fight in a crowd they’ll go down fast. You’ll want to tame a variety of them.
