U.S. Video Game Market | April 2024

▪️Total US spending fell around -3% in April compared to last year, to $4.1B
▪️PS5 was the #1 console in units and revenue, followed by Switch (#2 units, #3 revenue) and Xbox Series (#3 units, #2 revenue)
▪️PS5 is “currently the US market leader by a significant margin”
▪️Hardware sales declined a minimum of -26% compared to April 2023, Nintendo Switch dropped -69% (nice)
▪️PS5 sales are +8% ahead of PS4 on a time aligned basis, Xbox Series is trailing Xbox One by -13%
▪️Stellar Blade was the top selling game in April, followed by Helldivers 2 at #2 and COD: MW3 at #3
▪️Helldivers 2 remains the best selling premium game in 2024 year-to-date
▪️Helldivers 2 was also the #1 game on Steam by monthly active users
▪️Both Sea of Thieves (#3) and Grounded (#9) were in the top 10 selling games on PS5 in April
▪️PlayStation Portal was the best selling accessory in dollar sales for both April and 2024 year-to-date

Wie wird denn da “US market leader” definiert? Derzeitiger Gewinn aus Hardware- und Software-Verkauf? Klassisch wird ja market leader bei Videospielen mit Gesamthardwareverkaeufen in der derzeitigen Generation definiert und da ist die Switch schon aufgrund des viel frueheren Erscheinungsdatums weit vor PS5.

Phantom Blade Zero details!

– From Chinese studio S-GAME
– Inspired by Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Sifu and Bloodborne
– Traditional hack & slash with semi-open world
– Combat similar to Ninja Gaiden
– Main game is 30-40 hours
– Tons of side quests
– Post game content includes multiplayer dungeons, boss rushes, rogue-like abysses and more
– Horse riding
– Development started in early 2022
– In March 2023 they met with Shuhei Yoshida and Christian Svenssen from SIE
– Sony gave them a lot of support on the development and marketing and providing some consoles for event demos
– No exclusivity on any platform for now
– Full development costs expected to be about 55M USD
– Other inspirations include Berserk, Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal and Hong Kong Kung Fu movies
– Film action choreographer Kenji Tanigaki’s team is working on the game
– Coming to PS5 and PC
– Release date is still a while off
